A Gentle Whisper

Hello, stranger. Welcome to our humble blog. My apologies for the raw look of things as of yet; this site is still very much a work in progress. While the aesthetics may change, however, the substance of what we do will remain very much the same. This will hopefully become a blog you may come to for spiritual nourishment, reflections upon our Catholic faith, and advice on leading an observed life in today's fast-paced world. We want to become your sanctuary.

In modern society, we are busier than ever. We spend more time and money on school than ever before, we work longer and harder once we graduate, and technology pervades every aspect of our lives. Chances are if you're reading this, you have a Facebook, possibly a Twitter, maybe even an Instagram account, Snapchat, or a Tumblr blog. From the moment we wake up to the moment we close our eyes to go to sleep again, we are inundated with distractions.

We live in a culture of validation. As human beings, we all want to feel important, to feel validated. The Internet, smartphones, and social media have all made validation—at least on a superficial level—remarkably easy to find. Every Facebook post, every tweet, every Tumblr repost, all can be boiled down to the same thing:

“I want other people to acknowledge me and validate my existence.”

Is it any wonder then, that in an age where we clutter our lives with so much noise that we cannot even hear ourselves think, that we lose sight of what it means to walk with God?

Reflect on this verse, 1 Kings 19:12:

And after the earthquake there was a fire, but the LORD was not in the fire. And after the fire there was the sound of a gentle whisper.”

We often lose sight of God because we surround ourselves with noise and expect Him to shout over it to reach us. But if we are to lead faithful, observed lives, we can't simply relegate God to some dusty corner of our busy schedule and only listen to Him when it is convenient for us. We must separate ourselves from the distractions of the material world. Simplify, simplify, simplify. We don't need to dress in sack cloth and live in caves to seek God, but we must be able to part with our material possessions and desires, and relegate them to their rightful place. Only then will we be able to hear His message for us, and follow in His footsteps.

As we begin this blog, I invite you to walk with us. We'll explore what it means to lead a fulfilled physical, mental, moral, and spiritual life, and how that can all be drawn back to our Catholic faith. This blog is an invitation to explore our faith, to grow closer to God, and to live life according to His will.

Amidst the sound and fury of the world around us, I invite you to instead follow the gentle whisper.
